A 43-year-old North County man and his 17-year-old son were killed in the crash of a small private plane Monday about 3 miles off Camp Pendleton, authorities said.
They did not release the identities of the victims, pending notification of their relatives.
The twin-engine Piper Navajo reportedly took off from Palomar Airport at 3:15 p.m.
Coast Guard personnel recovered the bodies from the wreckage. A Coast Guard cutter was dispatched after a Marine Corps helicopter reported seeing an explosion in the area about 3:30 p.m., said Petty Officer William Atkinson, a Coast Guard spokesman.
