COUNTYWIDE : Officials Back Plan for County Bus Pass
- Share via
The Ventura County Transportation Commission recommended Friday that the county’s 10 public transit systems create a new bus pass that can be used on all the lines.
Barton-Aschman Associates, a consulting firm hired by the commission, proposed the pass to boost ridership and make it easier to transfer between buses operated by different systems.
Transportation officials believe local businesses, under pressure to cut traffic congestion and smog, will either buy or subsidize passes for their employees to encourage them to use public transportation. Employers will qualify for tax credits if they supply transit passes.
The commission referred the bus pass plan to a committee that includes representatives of the county’s 10 bus systems. These operators must settle on a design for the pass and a method of fairly dividing the funds collected.
Some transportation commissioners were concerned that pass holders will not be able to travel easily throughout the county because no connections exist between some of the bus systems.
Ginger Gherardi, the commission’s executive director, said her staff is looking at ways to improve the connections between bus systems.
