Gone to DePaul is Jermaine Galloway, who led the Fighting Irish to three consecutive league championships. But even without him, Mayberry has plenty of horses to win the race again. “We will probably be the favorite, but the league will be much more balanced,” Mayberry said. Trying to tip the scales Kennedy’s way will be two all-league returning starters, Cummins and Kunz, who lend size and stability to the team, and Vetica, who is headed for his third season of varsity action. Mayberry says Vetica is the most improved player on the squad. Cummins, who averaged 14 points in 1991-92, probably will be responsible for picking up the scoring slack created by Galloway’s departure (20.4 points). “We don’t look as fast as in past years, but we are as agile, and I have a good starting five that plays well together,” said Mayberry, who took the Irish to the Southern Section Division II-A finals last season. “We are not a great rebounding team. That’s going to be one of our weaknesses.” Kunz (188 rebounds) was second on the team in rebounding to Galloway (248) and no doubt will crash the boards again this season. He’ll get help from Anderson, who will handle the post. Pappas, who Mayberry says is a good three-point shooter, will share the backcourt with Vetica.
