PREP WATER POLO ROUNDUP : San Clemente Gives No. 1 El Toro a Scare
- Share via
Daniel Mathot scored his fourth goal in sudden death to give El Toro a 10-9 victory over San Clemente in a South Coast League water polo match Thursday at San Clemente.
El Toro (16-0, 1-0 in league), ranked No. 1 in Orange County, trailed by at least one goal for much of the match because of its inability to capitalize on six-on-five man advantages. Finally, with 43 seconds remaining, Brandon Stout scored inside the two-meter area to tie the score, 9-9.
San Clemente’s sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Gardner, who had 22 saves, created many offensive plays for the No. 3 Tritons (10-5, 1-1) by playing outside the cage and putting pressure on El Toro’s drivers.
