As Schuerholz and Manager Bobby Cox consider their World Series roster, one question involves relief pitcher Alejando Pena, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 21 with elbow tendinitis. Pena has been throwing very well, Schuerholz said.
“But is his arm entirely sound?” he asked. “Would it hold up for the entire World Series and who do we take off to make room?”
Deion Sanders?
Unlikely, even though Sanders was 0 for 5 in the playoffs, angered management with his Pittsburgh-to-Miami-and-back doubleheader Sunday and was perceived to have acted childishly during the Braves’ clubhouse celebration Wednesday night, dumping ice water on Schuerholz and CBS analyst Tim McCarver.
Where will Sanders be this weekend? On Saturday, before joining the Braves for Game 1 of the Series, he will help Coach Bobby Bowden fire up the Florida State Seminoles for their Atlantic Coast Conference showdown at Georgia Tech. Schuerholz said expects Sanders to honor his postseason commitment to the Braves on Sunday.
The Falcons will play that afternoon in San Francisco.
