MANILA — Avalanches of volcanic debris caused by heavy rains roared down the slopes of Mt. Pinatubo on Saturday, causing thousands to abandon their villages, officials said.
Monsoon rains have inundated a wide area around Pinatubo, 60 miles northwest of Manila, and more than 50 people have died during the past few weeks.
The flooded area includes Clark Air Base, which was abandoned by the U.S. Air Force when the volcano erupted in June, 1991.
The rains have caused debris from that eruption to plunge down Mt. Pinatubo’s slopes and swell rivers.
