Two small brush fires broke out near freeways in eastern Ventura County within a 15-minute period Sunday evening, authorities said.
The Ventura County Fire Department received a call at 4:47 p.m. about a fire along the south side of the Ventura Freeway at Rancho Road in Thousand Oaks.
Eight engines were sent to the fire, which spread quickly. The blaze blackened 1 1/2 acres before it was contained about 5:20 p.m., fire department dispatcher Vicki Crabtree said.
The second brush fire was reported at 5:03 p.m. on a field just north of the Simi Valley Freeway and east of Sycamore Street in Simi Valley.
This fire consumed only one-tenth of an acre before firefighters contained it about 5:15 p.m., Crabtree said.
The causes of the two fires were undetermined, authorities said.
