Just coasting: Dana Hills senior Ryan Crane will attempt to qualify in three events this week at the 4-A track and field preliminaries at UC Riverside.
At last week’s South Coast League finals at Trabuco Hills, Crane won the 110-meter hurdles, 200 and 400 and took second in the 300 hurdles. He won’t run the 200 Saturday, Dana Hills Coach Taz Murtaugh said, but the other three events will keep him busy.
After Crane runs the 110 hurdles, he’ll have approximately 25 minutes before the start of the 400, then about an hour until the 300 hurdles.
Crane’s mark in the 400 (a hand-timed 48.7) last week was a one-second improvement over his previous best, and second in Orange County this season after Foothill’s Aaron Taub (48.6 for 440 yards). Now Crane’s shooting for the school record--48.4, set in 1984 by Andy Sims.
“He hasn’t really run (the open 400) all year,” Murtaugh said. “He ran it the week before against San Clemente to see what he could do, but he coasted.
“Actually, he coasted at the end of the (league finals) race a little bit there, too.”
