An ice cream van driver suspected in the hit-and-run death of an 11-month-old La Puente boy last Sunday was identified Thursday as Tomas Aguilar Vargas, 24, a resident of the La Puente-El Monte area.
A felony warrant for his arrest will be sought, authorities said. But Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators said they believe that Vargas, a native Guatemalan, has fled to his homeland. Vargas was an independent, unlicensed ice cream vendor, lacking even a California driver’s license, when the accident happened, officials said.
Michael Angel Serrato was killed at 1:10 p.m. Sunday when he wandered into the street after his brothers and sisters bought ice cream from a van stopped in the 14000 block of Beckner Street.
