OUTLOOK
Mission Viejo fits snugly among the league’s not-so-fab four, along with Dana Hills, El Toro and San Clemente. The Diablos don’t figure to challenge Irvine and Capistrano Valley at the top. Like Dana Hills, El Toro and San Clemente, the Diablos lack experience, size and a big scorer. Unlike the others, however, Mission Viejo must try to bounce back from a winless league season. It’s going to take a big improvement simply to be competitive. Two of the Diablos’ best players are young--Jeff Carr, a junior guard, and Matt Denny, a sophomore forward. Carr, an all-league prospect, averaged 8.1 points. Rob Cullinan, a center who averaged 3.7 points last season, is the team’s best and most experienced senior. After that, it will take a number of unproven players to lift the Diablos into the league’s upper division. Minier, in his 13th season at Mission Viejo, isn’t kidding himself. He hopes the Diablos defeat all of the teams of equal ability. The Diablos aren’t quick, have small guards and don’t shoot particularly well, but Minier likes their attitude and work ethic.
