A Lexington, Ky., jury rejected a man’s claim that a secret Shrine temple initiation ceremony left him partially disabled by nightmares and a sleeping disorder. The jury listened to a week of testimony unveiling the organization’s secret rites before deciding that the Shrine fraternity owed no damages to Michael A. Vaughan. Vaughan, 44, contended that he was humiliated with electric shocks and was injured in a fall during the initiation ceremony for the Oleika Shrine Temple in June, 1989. The suit asked unspecified actual and punitive damages from the temple and from six men who helped conduct the ceremony.
