World IN BRIEF : HAITI : Radio Stations Halt News After Attacks

An armed attack at one radio station and threats at others prompted Port-au-Prince’s last three independent stations to suspend their news broadcasts. Most radio stations, the main source of information for Haiti’s largely poor and illiterate population, stopped delivering news after a Sept. 30 military coup in which several stations were attacked by soldiers and police. Seven armed men forced their way into the offices of Radio Galaxie on Tuesday night and ordered the station director into a car and drove off, according to Radio Metropole.
