German speedskater Uwe-Jens Mey, the 500-meter world champion, won the event in Heerenveen, Netherlands, with the best time of the year, taking the lead in the overall World Cup standings from American Dan Jansen.
Dutchman Rintje Ritsma skated his fastest 1,500 meters to take the lead from Falko Zandstra, also of Holland, and finish ahead of 1,500-meter world title-holder Johann Olav Koss of Norway.
U.S. veteran Bonnie Blair continued to dominate the women’s speed skating World Cup, winning a 500-meter sprint in Warsaw. Blair, who won a week ago in Berlin, was clocked in 41.81 seconds to finish ahead of Christine Aafting of the Netherlands and Angela Hauck of Germany.
