OUTLOOK
Magnolia will have to rely on the play of its back court to be competitive this season because of a lack of size and experience on the front line. The Sentinels have experience and talent at the guard positions with the return of starters Cervantes (10.2 points per game) and Hampton (6.0) and Sanchez. Cervantes has developed an outside shot to go with her quickness and defense. Lack of anyone taller than 5 feet 7 at the center and forward positions could prove fatal when it comes to rebounding and interior defense. Romeo will have to count on team speed, quickness and the development of a talented group of sophomores (Torregano, Mathews and Hicks) to offset the size disadvantage inside. Romeo expects the Sentinels to get off to a slow start but sees improvement as the season progresses if his newcomers come along as expected. With Brea-Olinda stronger than ever, solid teams at Savanna and Valencia and improved teams at Western and Anaheim, Magnolia will not only have to play to its potential but also find somebody who can scrap for rebounds if it hopes to duplicate last season’s record.
