First-year coach Adams will try to turn the program around. He was junior varsity coach at Los Alamitos the past two years and also has been an assistant at Marina and Bolsa Grande. Adams reports the Colonists had a record number of candidates turn out for girls’ basketball, and the school will even be able to field a freshman team. Adams bases his hopes for an improved season around the return of four starters. D’Silvia, a four-year varsity player, is described as the team’s best shooter and a capable ballhandler. Sanchez, who is coming off the girls’ volleyball team, is termed the best team’s athlete and an excellent defender. Adams also hopes he can lure Challenger, whom he ranks with Sanchez in athletic ability, off the volleyball team. Maldanado has been impressive with her quickness and court savvy and could be an effective point guard. Adams’ main concern is lack of backboard strength. He hopes to instill a winning attitude by emphasizing good tough practices, and once they see the system work, they’ll gain confidence, he said.
