OUTLOOK
The Lady Monarchs have won or shared eight of the past nine Angelus League titles and were champions last season with a 7-1 record, advancing to the second round of the playoffs before losing to Marina. The loss of Melissa McDonald to a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo track scholarship will be hard to handle until talented young players gain seasoning. Bloom, a defensive standout, is the lone returning starter. She and Gawronski, a good shooter and rebounder, lend experience and leadership to a promising crop of newcomers from a junior varsity team that finished 17-3 and a freshman-sophomore team that finished 8-0 in league play. Roghair was the first player off the bench last season and adds further experience. Mater Dei possesses good balance inside and out. The main problem area is lack of game experience with Bloom, a second-team all-league selection, the only returning starter. Gawronski had an outstanding summer league season, with play attracting the attention of several area four-year-college coaches. Lee is expected to add scoring and rebounding ability. Botana averaged 10 points for the junior varsity and gives the Lady Monarchs a three-point shooting threat.
