OAK PARK : Supervisors Raise Trash Collection Fee

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved sharply higher garbage rates for the Oak Park and Yerba Buena areas.
The new rate for a single-family home in Oak Park was increased by $5.45 to $17.59 a month, while the rubbish fee in Yerba Buena jumped $11.14 to $27.14 a month. The new rates are part of a countywide restructuring of garbage collection in unincorporated areas by the county’s Solid Waste Management Department, officials said.
The changes are being made so that the county can reduce the garbage it takes to landfills by 25% by 1995 and 50% by 2000, as required by law.
That can be accomplished through recycling, the officials said. The recycling fee, included in the bill, is $1.75 for Oak Park and $2 for Yerba Buena, a community in the Santa Monica Mountains near the Los Angeles County line.
The Yerba Buena rate is higher partly because that community is several miles farther from a landfill than Oak Park, officials said.
Supervisor Maria VanderKolk said that the new rates have been explained at meetings in both communities and that residents seemed to understand that the changes are necessary.
