MAC ATTACK: Fleetwood Mac will survive the recent departure of Rick Vito, the seventh lead guitarist to leave the band. But will it survive the feud between Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks?
The two squabbled over the rights to Nicks’ song “Silver Spring,” an obscure Mac track that she wanted to use on her recent greatest-hits album but that Fleetwood wanted to reserve for the group’s upcoming 25th-anniversary box set.
Nicks, who along with Christine McVie announced last year that she would no longer tour with the band, has now been telling the press that she’s gone for good because of the conflict. But the band’s spokesman, Dennis Dunstan, says Nicks and McVie will both be on board for the four new songs slated to be recorded early next year for the anniversary anthology. (Nicks was unavailable for comment.)
While a search for a permanent lead guitarist goes on, the new recordings may see some familiar faces in guest appearances in that slot, Dunstan says. Maybe Lindsey Buckingham, who’s still working on his oft-delayed third solo album?
Meanwhile, look for Nicks on Arsenio Hall’s TV show Tuesday and listen for her on a national live radio broadcast from the Whisky on Thursday, to be carried in Los Angeles by KLSX-FM (97.1).
