Westminster Ethnic Strife in Schools

Re “Let Others Handle School’s Problems” (View Letters, Oct. 1): Mr. Kent McClish is not aware that the violence and the racial tensions at Westminster High School are not a recent phenomenon nor the result of media sensationalism.
The administrators may have a done a good job teaching the students the three Rs (reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic), but they have failed terribly in teaching the students the other two Rs (roots and respect).
In the land of democracy, outlawed segregation and illegal discrimination, our schools must teach and reflect the values of our society. Attack on media and reporters, silence, cover-ups, secrecy and unwillingness to address the problems in public are tactics that have not and will not work in this country.
