City Councilman and former Police Chief Orbrey L. Duke was reported in fair condition Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering complications from a heart-bypass operation.
Duke, 61, underwent surgery at Kaiser Foundation Hospital on Oct. 2 and suffered a heart attack Monday. He was recovering in fair condition in the hospital’s critical-care unit, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
Police Chief Norman Hansen said Duke’s wife, Alta, told him Wednesday that Duke was recovering and resting comfortably.
Duke was elected to the council in 1986 and was reelected in 1990. He served as La Palma’s police chief from 1970 to 1974, when he was hired as the chief of the Cypress department. He retired from Cypress in 1981 and has been working for the last five years as the assistant manager for security at Knott’s Berry Farm.
