TENNIS ROUNDUP : Krickstein Upsets Stich in 3 Sets

Aaron Krickstein upset Wimbledon champion Michael Stich of Germany, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, Wednesday in the second round of the $1-million Stockholm Open.

Krickstein gained control by getting in 72% of his first serves.

“It was by far my best win of the year, and one of my best wins ever,” Krickstein said. “I knew I would have a chance to beat him if I served well.”

In late matches, Goran Prpic ousted wild-card entry Jimmy Connors, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, and Jim Courier beat Germany’s Carl-Uwe Steeb, 6-4, 6-4.

In other matches, Boris Becker rallied to defeat Omar Camporese of Italy, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, qualifier David Engel of Sweden upset 10th-seeded David Wheaton, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), seventh-seeded Pete Sampras outlasted Thomas Hogstedt of Sweden, 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (9-7), 6-3, fifth-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Todd Woodbridge of Australia, 7-5, 6-2; Brad Gilbert downed Patrick McEnroe, 6-2, 6-2, and Derrick Rostagno led, 3-0, when Anders Jarryd of Sweden was forced to retire because of an injury.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf of Germany breezed past Andrea Strnadova of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-3, and advanced to the quarterfinals of an indoor tournament at Brighton, England.

“I played a lot better today,” said Graf, who struggled in the first round. “But I am still not satisfied.”
