PREP NOTES

Some might call it a test of endurance, others perhaps might question the sanity of it all. But Dick Miller considers it fun.
Miller, a civics and social sciences teacher at Garden Grove High School, has been the public address announcer at Argonaut home football games since 1965.
For those not quick with mathematics, that’s 26 years and about 130 home games Miller has announced. The feat is impressive not only because Miller has been committed to the task for so long, but because Garden Grove hasn’t fielded winning teams many of those years.
Miller, 56, has a simple explanation for his involvement.
“I would be going to the games anyway, so this is a chance for me to be a groupie and get away with it,” Miller said.
The bearded, jovial Miller began announcing high school football games in Nebraska for Omaha South High when he taught there in the 1950s.
This season, Garden Grove is 4-0 and Miller is enjoying himself immensely.
“We’ve gone through a long, dry spell, so I figured, ‘What the heck. Let’s liven it up a bit,’ ” said Miller, who often breaks up the crowd with his humorous comments. “Hopefully, I’ve made it a little more fun for the Garden Grove fans.”
