PREP NOTES : Hallmark of Edison vs. Fontana: Tight Scores, Loose Lips
- Share via
Obscene gestures, accusations of unsportsmanlike behavior and a great football game. Leave it to Edison and Fontana to put on such a show.
Although the schools have played only four times, the rivalry is as intense as any. Among Friday’s incidents:
--Gestures from the Fontana players during pregame warm-ups, when the Steelers were either claiming themselves to be No. 1 or were ridiculing Edison’s fans.
--More than 100 former Edison football players formed a human tunnel that both teams had to run through just before the game. The Fontana players claimed they were spit on.
--Fontana Coach Dick Bruich also said racial slurs were shouted at a Fontana assistant coach, who is black.
--An uneasy postgame scene, where the players shook hands. Two Edison players approached Fontana quarterback Gary Tessitore and said, “If we see you in the playoffs, we’re going to kick your . . . “ Tessitore’s reply was a string of obscenities.
Oh, yes, the game. Fontana won, 28-26.
