Long Beach : 4.8% Raise Given as College Changes Non-Teaching Jobs

Non-teaching employees at Long Beach City College will receive at least a 4.8% pay increase this year. The salary adjustment, which trustees approved Tuesday, is tied to cost-of-living increases and a reclassification of college workers according to the value of their jobs.
The job-value rating was arrived at based on a study by the Ewing Co., an Orange County research firm. Workers whose jobs are now considered more important will receive a pay raise of 4.8% or more. Workers in jobs judged to be less crucial will receive a onetime payment of 4.8% this year rather than a permanent raise.
No layoffs or pay cuts will result from the study, said Caroline Yousef, director of college fiscal affairs. Pay for positions reclassified at a lower value may drop, however, whenever employees in those jobs are replaced.
College officials are negotiating salaries with members of the faculty and administration.
