Nation IN BRIEF : NEW HAMPSHIRE : Teacher’s Move for New Trial Denied

A judge denied three motions in former Hampton, N.H., teacher Pamela Smart’s attempt to get a new trial. She was convicted of coaxing her teen-age lover and his friends into killing her husband and was given a life sentence. Rockingham County Superior Court Judge Douglas Gray, who presided over the Smart trial, denied motions for a new trial based on allegations of juror misconduct and that prosecutors failed to disclose evidence that would have aided her defense. His ruling on a fourth motion, which claims that media coverage of her trial tainted the jury, is pending.
