TOP RANKS: When it comes to neuroscience research, Harvard and Johns Hopkins always come to mind. But UC Irvine? It ranks ahead of both of them, and sixth nationwide, in a new study of the best neuroscience research institutions in America, conducted by the Institute for Scientific Information in Philadelphia. . . . Even science analysts are a little taken aback. David Pendlebury, editor of Science Watch, calls UCI the “surprise” of the Top Ten. . . . “Its leadership role in the neurosciences has perhaps not been fully appreciated,” he wrote. UCI specializes in research in cognitive and behavioral sciences, brain imaging, and anatomy and molecular neurobiology.
