The Death of Arturo Jimenez

A young man is dead. The events surrounding his being shot are in dispute, with discrepancies, huge ones, between what the Sheriff’s Department says happened and what civilians on the scene say they saw. In that context, a story that focuses only on the blood-alcohol level of the man who was shot (Metro, Aug. 13) implies that it’s somehow acceptable to shoot or nearly beat to death a person who is under the influence. It’s not. I don’t care how much drug-war hysteria and just-say-no rhetoric is going around. The drugs and alcohol in Arturo Jimenez system weren’t lethal in this situation; the force used by the deputies was.
