NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON STATE : Video Camera Spots Oil-Leaking Ship

A sunken ship, whose leaking fuel threatens the pristine Pacific Northwest coastline, has been spotted 25 miles off Neah Bay on Washington state’s northwest tip by an underwater video camera, officials said. The Canadian Coast Guard planned to send a mini-submarine to inspect the Tenyo Maru, a Japanese fish processor that sank July 22 in about 500 feet of water after it was hit by a Chinese vessel. The Tenyo Maru carried 240,000 gallons of fuel, and a coast guard spokesman said the mini-sub’s observations could help in plugging leaks or pumping out the remaining oil. Tens of thousands of gallons of oil have oozed from the ship, killing sea birds and depositing tar balls on shore.
