Alhambra : Ballot Wording Approved

Wording of a ballot argument urging approval of a new police station because of a large increase in the police workload was approved unanimously Tuesday by the City Council.

The argument, written by Mayor Mary Louise Bunker, said police arrested about 130 people a month in 1955, when the station was built, but now make more than 400 arrests a month.

In the face of that growth, Bunker wrote, department employees have been forced to work out of trailers and converted closets, and sometimes have to let suspects out of jail to make room for suspects in more serious crimes.

The city election on whether to build a new police station is scheduled for Sept. 17.
