A 49-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision after his pickup truck veered into oncoming traffic in Oxnard, police said Tuesday.
Hideyo Bennett of Oxnard was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard at 11 p.m. Monday, Ventura County Coroner’s Investigator Jim Wingate said.
The driver of the other vehicle, Armando Raya-Vega of Oxnard, was listed in serious condition at the hospital, police said. Raya-Vega, 24, suffered face and neck injuries, Oxnard Police Sgt. Jeff Young said.
Bennett was traveling west on East 5th Street near Richmond Avenue about 10 p.m. when his Datsun pickup crossed the double yellow line and collided with Raya-Vega’s Oldsmobile Cutlass, Young said. Raya-Vega was traveling east in the slow lane.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police said they did not know if alcohol was involved or how fast the cars were traveling.
Bennett, who is survived by two sons, was employed by the Northrop Corp. in Newbury Park, the Ventura County coroner’s office said.
