Riding moderate northerly winds of 10-12 knots, the faster boats that started Saturday in the 36th biennial Transpacific race to Hawaii already have started to overtake the smaller boats that started Thursday.
Bob McNulty’s Santa Cruz 70, Chance, extended its lead in IOR-A class to 28 miles over Katsuhiko Takeda’s Nelson/Marek 68, Marishiten. Overall leader is Fred Hibberd Jr.’s SC 50, Solution, a Thursday starter that was 1,459 nautical miles from Diamond Head and 103 miles ahead of Chance.
