Two boats crossed the line before the gun and had to restart as the 11 IMS-B and IOR-C class entries set sail in the 36th biennial Transpacific race to Honolulu. The two overanxious starters were Perestroika, a new Danish-built, 39-foot sloop skippered by Gib Black, and Ariel, a 53-footer with Richard Rosic at the helm.
With an eight-knot wind from the southeast, the boats didn’t have to contend with the usual head winds. Setting the early pace were Power Play, Out ‘n About and Windsurfer, all from IMS-B.
The rest of the fleet in three classes for larger boats is scheduled to start the 2,217-nautical-mile race off Point Fermin today at 1 p.m.
