Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON STATE : Teachers in Seattle to Suspend Strike

Striking teachers in Washington state’s largest school district voted to go back to work shortly after the Washington Education Assn. urged local districts to suspend the strike. Seattle teachers voted 1,263 to 1,045 to suspend the walkout and classes were scheduled to resume today for the district’s 41,200 students, said Reese Lindquist, Seattle Teachers Assn. president. The WEA recommended that teachers return to work, but said the walkout will resume if the Legislature fails to meet teachers’ demands for more funding. Striking teachers in 31 other districts were expected to vote later on suspending the strike, which began April 18.
