Bernson Flyer May Be Misunderstood
I was surprised to see a letter from the president of Andasol Elementary School PTA featured in Councilman Hal Bernson’s campaign flyer that arrived at my home.
Andasol is one of the 24 schools that compose the North West Valley PTA Council, of which I am president.
I was concerned that the use of this letter could be misunderstood as an endorsement of his candidacy.
Though PTA is political in that we work for the passage of legislation and policies that will benefit schools, education and children, we are strictly nonpartisan.
In speaking with the author of the letter, Arlene Kohn, I learned that Bernson had abstracted from a thank-you letter written to him in the early 1980s when she was president of Andasol PTA.
He used her letter without her knowledge or consent.
PTA leaders are taught to always say thank-you to anyone who helps PTA, the children and the schools.
Saying thank-you is a sign of good manners-- not a political endorsement.
