An 83-year-old Simi Valley man was uninjured Thursday after his car was hit by a train, Simi police said.
Francis Akin told officers he was driving his 1980 Pontiac south on Sycamore Drive near Los Angeles Avenue when the crossing arms and flashing lights were activated by an approaching train.
Akin stopped suddenly, leaving himself in the path of the oncoming train, and was unable to move his vehicle quickly enough to get out of the train’s path, Sgt. Jim Payne said.
The front of Akin’s vehicle was hit by the train, throwing it off the track. The vehicle was demolished, but Akin was not injured, Payne said.
During the police investigation, Akin told officers that the incident was only his second accident during 70 years of driving.
