In “Picking the Best Films of 1991--Sight Unseen,” March 24, Jack Mathews made two references to the possibility of a woman being nominated for best director for the first time.
I cannot vouch for her personally, but by all media photographs and reports, I understand that Lina Wertmuller is a woman.
She’s a brilliant director and she was a best-director nominee in 1976 for “Seven Beauties.”
