One would never hear, either at the movies or on a TV sitcom, “You are acting just like a cripple” or, “What a cripple you are.” Yet for some reason substituting the word “retard” for “cripple” has become a derogatory remark. The film “He Said, She Said,” and the TV show “Roseanne” (ABC) come to mind as two recent offenders. I, for one, am deeply offended by these characterizations.
