Cal State Northridge swimming Coach Pete Accardy was named NCAA Division II co-coach of the decade by the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming Committee.
Accardy’s women’s teams at CSUN won Division II national championships in 1982, ‘87, ’88 and ’89. Accardy shared the honor with Clarion (Pa.) Coach Becky Rutt Leas, whose teams won three titles in the ‘80s.
Three former CSUN athletes were named to the all-decade team: breaststroker Tina Schnare, backstroker Chris Breedy and diver Xiao Xia Chen.
Schnare won four consecutive 200-yard breaststroke national championships from 1986-89 and still holds the Division II record of 2 minutes 19.79 seconds.
Breedy was the 1988 champion in the 200 backstroke in a record 2:04.38, which still stands.
Chen, the 1987 three-meter diving titlist, remains the record-holder with 494.20 points.
The awards are part of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of NCAA women’s championships.
