Plumbing Company Pays Fine for Hazardous Waste

A Santa Monica plumbing company paid a $100,000 fine Tuesday for dumping bottles of drain cleaner into the trash, causing a city sanitation worker to be disfigured when one bottle exploded.
The firm, Snyder Diamond, pleaded guilty Jan. 16 to a single felony count of illegally disposing of hazardous waste, with great bodily injury. A second charge against the firm was dismissed Tuesday as part of the company’s plea agreement.
The firm disposed of the bottles of drain cleaner in the city’s trash in May. After the garbage was tossed into a mechanical trash truck, a bottle exploded, spraying an unidentified sanitation worker with caustic chemicals.
