5 Millionth U.S. Patent Issued: The University of Florida won the patent for a bacterial process to make ethanol, a type of alcohol than can be used in place of gasoline. The process uses two types of bacteria to convert agricultural waste, yard trash and newspapers into ethanol. It “is an apt illustration of how American ingenuity can rise to technological and environmental challenges to improve the quality of our lives,” Commerce Secretary Robert A. Mosbacher said.
