Tops in Their Fields: Six young performers emerged from a field of 300 Southern California high school student entrants to win the Music Center Spotlight Awards Monday. The winners are Christina Summer Gibbs of Newport Beach (ballet), Matthew Tony Rushing of San Bernardino (modern dance), Claire Penneau of Riverside (opera), Shameka Bell of Torrance (pop/musical comedy), Kathy Koo-Young Kim of Irvine (classical instrumental music), Donald Vega Gutierrez of Los Angeles (jazz instrumental music). The awards--totaling $45,000 in scholarships--are sponsored by the Pacific Telesis Foundation.
