Maicel Malone of Arizona State broke the American record in winning the 400-meter dash in 51.05 seconds at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis. The old record of 51.77 was set by Diane Dixon in Budapest in 1989. Arkansas won an unprecedented eighth consecutive men’s title; Louisiana State won the women’s championship.
