Survey Not Supportive of Stadium Proposal

A proposal for the city of Lancaster to recruit a minor league baseball team by building a $5.5-million stadium might be about to strike out at City Hall based on the results of a survey of city residents.

The proposal received a lukewarm response, with 56.3% of those polled favoring a team and 49.8% saying they would support an annual $12 tax to pay for the stadium. Both percentages are well below the two-thirds needed to pass a bond measure for the stadium.

Lancaster City Council members, who authorized the $5,000 survey, are scheduled to consider the results Monday. But the council already is divided over the merits of the proposal, and the survey responses from 926 residents seem unlikely to boost its prospects.
