COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Closing Seconds All That Count as SCC Tops Master’s

Bryan Moore’s layup with two seconds remaining gave the Southern California College men’s basketball team a 75-73 victory over The Master’s College in the first round of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 playoffs Tuesday in Newhall.

Jeff Bickmore, who played despite a sprained ankle, had 35 points and 10 rebounds for Southern California College (24-7), which advances to play Biola in a semifinal game at Whittier College Saturday.

The Master’s (19-11) led, 41-34, at the half and scored the first basket of the second half but didn’t score another for more than five minutes. In that span, the Vanguards went on a 13-0 run to go ahead 47-43 with 13:58 remaining.

Jason Webster, who scored a season-high 25 points for The Master’s, made a shot to tie the score, 73-73, with 35 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Vanguards ran down the clock and Elbert Davis passed it to Moore in the lane.

In another District 3 playoff game:

Christ College Irvine 70, Fresno Pacific 63--Keith Rogers had 18 points and Brian Hazelwood 16 as the Eagles (13-17) won in their first district playoff game. They will face Westmont in a 6 p.m. semifinal Saturday at Whittier.

In nonconference baseball:

USC 8, UC Irvine 2--The Trojans (14-6-1) scored five runs in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead at Irvine. Joe Furukawa and Dave Dieter each had two hits for Irvine (9-9).

Redlands 5, Southern California College 3--Jon Shintaku hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie for Redlands (4-6). Doug Rystrom had three of SCC’s six hits as the Vanguards dropped to 5-6.

Cal State Long Beach 14, Chapman 1--Scott Talanoa, a junior transfer from Orange Coast, hit a three-run home run in the third to give Long Beach a 5-0 lead.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 4-6, Cal State Northridge 5-0--Northridge rallied from a four-run deficit in the first game to defeat Fullerton for the first time in six years. In the second game, Kim Powers hit a home run in the fourth for Fullerton.

Chapman 10-7, Cal Baptist 0-0--Jacki Blake (6-0) struck out eight and Denise Popoff had three hits and four RBIs in the first game for visiting Chapman (11-1). In the second game, Cheri Schreck (5-1) struck out seven and Sandy Olivas hit her third home run of the season.
