California IN BRIEF : BERKELEY : Sub Chaser Getting Chased From Port

The last known World War II submarine chaser could be history if its owner does not find it a new home. The Collinsville, a 183-foot submarine patrol craft used against the Japanese from 1944 to 1945, now floats in Berkeley’s north marina basin. The ship’s owner, Claus von Wendel, who owns seven vessels, would like to turn the sub chaser into a nautical museum. Berkeley, the Bay Conservation Development Commission and Catellus Development Corp. want all of Wendel’s ships gone by Feb. 25. “The boats are illegal fill in public waters,” said Charlie Sager, asset manager for Catellus, which owns the land under the water. Catellus plans to junk Wendel’s belongings--historic or not--if they remain.
