Marina center Cherokee Parks scored a school-record 44 points to lead the Vikings to a 96-75 victory over Alta Loma in the first round of the Division I-A playoffs Friday at Huntington Beach.
The previous record of 43 was set in 1975 by Rich Branning, who went on to play at Notre Dame. The 6-foot-11 Parks, who is bound for Duke this fall, converted 14 of 18 shots from the field, pulled down 17 rebounds, blocked six shots and had four assists. Parks was also 16 for 20 from the free-throw line.
Marina (16-10), which shot 67% from the floor, broke away in the third quarter after leading, 42-39, with 5 minutes 26 seconds remaining to take a 58-46 lead on Sean Haselrig’s basket with 1:27 left in the quarter.
Alta Loma (17-9), a third-place finisher in the Baseline League, made a brief run and trailed, 64-57, with 5:26 left in the game. But Parks, who scored 15 points in the final quarter, helped the Vikings pull away.
Darren Crooks scored 13 and Haselrig and Brant Shelor each had 12 for Marina. Trevor Rogerson and Allan Hebbert scored 20 and 19, respectively, for Alta Loma.
