Second-Period Burst Lets Oilers Hold Off Penguins’ Rally, 7-5

EDMONTON, Canada — The Edmonton Oilers scored three goals in 2:15 of the second period and hung on to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 7-5, Monday night.

Goals by Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson and two by Petr Klima gave Edmonton a 5-1 lead.

Anatoli Semenov set up Messier’s goal and scored twice himself, including a shorthanded goal in the first period.

Mario Lemieux had a goal and set up two others. Rookie Jaromir Jagr scored twice and Zarley Zalapski and John Cullen once for the Penguins. A goal by the Oilers’ Joe Murphy closed the scoring.
