WORLD : Unionists Battle Seoul Police

SEOUL — About 3,000 workers hurling rocks battled riot police today outside South Korea’s second-largest auto plant, demanding the release of arrested union leaders, officials said.
Police used tear gas to drive the workers back to their factory in the western port city of Inchon. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests in the hourlong clash.
The workers from Daewoo Motor Co. demanded the release of 67 union leaders and shouted slogans supporting a strike by employees at a sister company on the southern island of Koje, police officials said.
Police later released 53 of the union leaders and said most others will be formally arrested on charges of meddling in outside labor disputes.
