Germany and Gulf War
Whatever Germany’s reasons for staying out of the Gulf War may be, I doubt that they have to do with its new-found love of peace or moral obligation not to march on foreign countries again, as suggested by Reichel. The huge demonstrations in Germany were not against direct German involvement. They were not even against the war per se. What they were against is U.S. involvement!
While I am glad that German armies are not marching on foreign countries, Reichel’s piece would have more credibility if the peace-loving Germans had, for example, staged massive demonstrations when Iraq invaded, brutalized and annexed Kuwait. Where were the German peaceniks during the long war between Iraq and Iran? Where were they when Iraq gassed its own population with chemical weapons, possibly made with German components and technology?
