HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : La Jolla Country Day Romps Past Julian

Julian trailed, 42-28, at halftime then got pounded in the third quarter, 30-7, as La Jolla Country Day (17-4, 9-1) went into a full-court press and man-to-man defense and won their Coastal League game, 87-45. Everett Alexander had a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds for the Torres. Julian fell to 2-17, 0-8.
In other Coastal League games:
Mountain Empire 63, Bishop’s 61--Gilberto Gonzalez led all scorers with 29 points, but it might have been his 20-second dribble around the court in the final minute that was his biggest contribution. Up by two with 21 seconds to play, Gonzalez stole a Bishop’s pass and dribbled the ball until there was only one second remaining. That sealed the victory that pushed Mountain Empire over the .500 mark with a 10-9 overall record and a 6-3 Coastal League record. Bishop’s is 5-3, 15-6.
Army-Navy 53, Parker 31--The Warriors (12-6, 6-4) led, 6-5, after the first quarter but went on a 17-2 run in the second to blow the game open. Stewart Smothers, James Reed, Phil Parks and Walter Puffelis each had 10 points for Army-Navy.

Palomar League
Orange Glen 38, Rancho Buena Vista 37 (OT)--Amber Cravy led the Patriots (5-17, 3-9) to the upset victory in overtime with 12 points. Jenny Harris had 12 for the Longhorns, which fell to 11-11, 4-8.
Poway 66, Vista 56--Kara Berg scored 20 points to lead Poway. Vista’s Alicia Gerken and Missy Rand had 20 apiece.
